Swiss Superstar dominating in Dortmund

Gregor Kobel's standout performance as Borussia Dortmund's top goalkeeper has been truly remarkable. At 6'5" (195cm), the Swiss shot-stopper not only commands the penalty area with authority but also showcases exceptional agility and skill that have cemented his status as a key player in Dortmund's defence.

Kobel started his professional journey at Hoffenheim, achieving a clean sheet in his first match during a 1-0 victory over Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the DFB-Pokal (German Cup). Following loan spells at Augsburg and Stuttgart, he eventually transferred to Stuttgart in July 2020. A year later, he made a €15 million switch to his current team, Borussia Dortmund, a move that highlighted his strong performances at Stuttgart in his single year at the club. In the previous season, Kobel made history as the first Swiss goalkeeper to guide his team to a Champions League final.

Gregor Kobel wears a customized version of the Puma Ultra range gloves, which typically come with a Hybrid cut like those worn by Puma goalkeepers such as Ederson Moraes (who we covered in a previous glove showcase). In contrast, Kobel's gloves have a traditional roll-finger cut, making him part of a select group of goalkeepers who prefer this style.

In addition to the adjustment made to the cut of his gloves, another significant modification that has gained popularity among Puma goalkeepers is the incorporation of a latex thumb feature. This innovation has been embraced by prominent goalkeepers like Yann Sommer, who have recognised its benefits. The latex thumb element enhances the overall design of the gloves by offering increased support specifically tailored for the thumb area. By providing this extra layer of protection and stability, the latex thumb feature plays a crucial role in minimising the risk of thumb injuries.

In choosing to incorporate more latex, Gregor Kobel decides to equip his SMU gloves with a complete latex strap. This enhancement provides him with wrist support that surpasses what the retail model's fabric strap offers. The level of protection in his gloves resembles that of our own, as we strive to deliver top-notch protection for all goalkeepers without compromising performance.
